NYC street cleaning
Is alternate side parking in effect today?
The 2026 NYC alternate side parking calendar, straight from NYC DOT: every suspension day, which ones also suspend the meters, and where emergency suspensions are announced.
Today in New York
Alternate side parking follows the posted street-cleaning sign on your block, except on the suspension days listed below.
How does alternate side parking work?
Street-cleaning signs list the days and hours when you can’t park on that side of the street, so the sweeper can get to the curb. Outside those hours the curb follows its other posted rules. The sign on your block is the rule: if it says Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 to 10 a.m., your car has to be off that side during those windows.
What time is alternate side parking?
It depends on the block. Each street-cleaning sign lists its own days and hours, and the two sides of one street often differ. Read the sign on your side of the street.
How much is an alternate side parking ticket?
Parking during a posted street-cleaning window is violation code 21. The NYC Department of Finance lists the fine at $65. More on fines in what NYC parking tickets actually cost.
When is alternate side parking suspended in 2026?
On these days NYC DOT suspends alternate side parking citywide. Meters are suspended only on major legal holidays; on every other suspension day, you still pay the meter.

Do I have to pay the meter when alternate side is suspended?
Only on major legal holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. NYC DOT: “On all other holidays, only street cleaning rules are suspended.” Other posted rules, like no-standing zones and hydrants, always apply.
Can alternate side parking be suspended for snow or emergencies?
The city can also suspend alternate side parking for snow or other emergencies, with little notice. NYC DOT says to check NYC 311 or Notify NYC; it also posts updates from @NYCASP on X. This page only knows the published calendar, so an emergency suspension won’t show above.
